Abstract
Currently, there are two specific questionnaires for the assessment of sleep disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease: the Parkinson's Disease Sleep Scale (PDSS) and the Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease-Sleep (SCOPA-Sleep). Both scales have, as a whole, satisfactory psychometric properties; they are easy to apply and to be interpreted. Due to their structure and content, they can be considered complementary since the PDSS mainly informs about the quality of nocturnal sleep and the potential disturbing causes and the SCOPA-Sleep assesses nocturnal sleep and daytime sleepiness, but it does not explore the symptoms that may influence the quality of the nocturnal sleep. Other two specific instruments for Parkinson's disease, the Non-Motor Symptoms Questionnaire and Scale, were developed to identify and to quantify (respectively) this kind of manifestations. Both contain specific domains for sleep dysfunctions that, although less extensive and detailed than the PDSS and the SCOPA-Sleep, allow to assess them simultaneously (and therefore to establish relationships) with a variety of relevant disorders. Due to the complexity of the Parkinson's disease manifestations, patient evaluation is necessarily complex and should be aided with the help of useful and valid instruments.
