El trabajo propone la acumulación de glutamato en astrocitos nomo un mecanismo para la excitotoxicidad en las enfermedades de los ganglios basales

EL ESTRIADO EN EL ORIGEN Y LA PROGRESIÓN DE LA ENFERMEDAD DE PARKINSON.

La liberación excesiva de glutamato estriatal (inducida por una reducción de dopamina en la enfermedad de Parkinson) es recaptada por astrocitos donde genera una inhibición de la glutamina sintetasa. Esta inhibición desencadena una acumulación persistente de glutamato en astrocitos (semanas) cuya liberación podría generar excitotoxicidad de gran intensidad.
