La EII (activa) lleva a un aumento de la generación de una combinación de citoquinas inflamatorias, potencialmente perjudiciales para el hueso, al igual que el tratamiento de la EII con corticosteroides que se utiliza habitualmente. Estos factores combinados provocan la osteoporosis y el aumento del riesgo de fractura ósea. Se recomiendan estrategias de protección ósea.
